The "upkammer"

Three steps lead to the upkammer; upkammer is a Low German word meaning “upper room” or “upstairs chamber”, a raised room above the vaulted cellar of the house. The upkammer was the family’s recreation room. The mother, Rosalia Humberg, particularly enjoyed being there. It is said that here, she was able to oversee the corridor and the shop from the comfort of her red sofa.
